Richard
Davis (15 d'abril de 1930 - 6 de setembre de 2023) va ser un baixista de jazz
estatunidenc. Entre les seves contribucions més conegudes als àlbums d'altres
persones hi ha Out to Lunch! d'Eric Dolphy, Point of
Departure d'Andrew Hill i Astral Weeks de Van Morrison, del qual el crític
Greil Marcus va escriure (a The Rolling Stone Illustrated History of Rock and
Roll): "Richard Davis va proporcionar el millor baix mai s'ha sentit en un
àlbum de rock".
Davis
va néixer a Chicago, Illinois, el 15 d'abril de 1930. La seva mare va morir
durant el part i va ser criat per Robert i Elmora Johnson. Davis es va inclinar
cap al baix i va començar la seva carrera musical cantant baix al trio vocal de
la seva família. Va estudiar contrabaix a l'institut amb Walter Dyett i va ser
membre de l'Orquestra Juvenil del Gran Chicago, tocant en la primera actuació
de l'orquestra a l'Orchestra Hall de Chicago el 14 de novembre de 1947. Després

Després

cinquanta, Richard Davis va conèixer i tocar amb Sonny Blount (mundialment

complex. A mesura que Richard Davis continuava desenvolupant, es va inspirar
molt en Mingus. El 1968, amb Astral Weeks de Van Morrison, Davis va exercir com
a director musical de facto, dirigint el conjunt d'improvisació durant la
