El 1970 va conèixer a el baixista Bernard Edwards i van formar una banda de rock anomenada The Boys amb la qual mai van aconseguir un contracte discogràfic ja que les companyies els rebutjaven a l'descobrir que eren negres

El 1977 al costat de Bernard Edwards i Tony Thompson formen el grup de funk Chic

Chic es va dissoldre el 1983

El 1992 Rodgers and Edwards organitzen la reunió de Chic, van gravar nou material i van sortir de gira amb força èxit

El 1996 la revista Billboard li va lliurar el títol de Major Productor de l'Món

1996: Va participar en una sèrie de concerts homenatge al Japó al costat de Bernard Edwards, Sister Sledge, Steve Winwood, Simon Le Bon i Slash

Bernard Edwards (El seu soci musical de tota la vida) va morir de pneumònia durant aquesta gira
