Martin
Louis Paich va ser un pianista, compositor, arranjador, productor discogràfic,
director musical i director d'orquestra de jazz estatunidenc. Com a músic i arranjador, va treballar amb artistes
com Peggy Lee, Ella Fitzgerald, Stan Kenton, Al Hirt, Art Pepper, Buddy Rich, Ray
Brown, Shorty Rogers, Pete Rugolo,
Ray Charles i Mel Tormé. La seva llarga associació amb Tormé va incloure
un dels primers àlbums del cantant, Mel Tormé with
the Marty Paich Dek-Tette. Durant les següents tres dècades, va treballar amb cantants pop com Andy Williams i Jack Jones, i per a cinema i televisió. Va ser el pare de David Paich,
membre fundador de la banda de rock Toto.
Originari de Oakland,
Califòrnia, Paich va aprendre a tocar l'acordió i el
piano molt jove. A partir
de 1935, quan tenia deu anys, dirigia
bandes i actuava en bodes. Als setze, va escriure
arranjaments amb Pete Rugolo. Va servir en el Cos Aeri dels Estats
Units en la Segona Guerra
Mundial. Va assistir
a la Universitat del Sud de Califòrnia
i va obtenir un màster en composició del Conservatori de
Música de Los Angeles. Entre els
seus professors es trobaven Julia Bal de Zúniga, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco,
i Arnold Schoenberg.
En la dècada de 1950, a més de treballar com a director musical
per a Peggy Lee, va escriure
arranjaments per a Chet Baker,
Ray Brown, Stan Kenton, Shelly Manne, Dave Pell, Buddy Rich,
Shorty Rogers, Mahalia
Jackson i per a la pel·lícula La dama i el rodamon. Va començar a gravar amb Mel Tormé
en 1955 en l'àlbum It's a Blue
World quan Tormé estava passant
de cantant melòdic a cantant de jazz. Durant l'any següent, la seva banda de deu integrants va acompanyar a Tormé en l'àlbum Mel Tormé with
the Marty Paich Dek-Tette, que contenia una versió de la cançó de la dècada de 1930 "Lulu's Back in Town". També va escriure arranjaments per a Art Pepper per
a l'àlbum Art Pepper + Elevin – Modern Jazz Classics.
Va
morir en 1995, en Santa Ynez, Califòrnia.
