Es conocido por su trabajo en el género swing,
pero también actuó en los géneros del jazz de la Costa Oeste y el soul jazz. Durante la década de 1950, tocó swing con Lionel
Hampton y Charlie Ventura. A principios de la década de 1960, comenzó a tocar
con músicos como Cat Anderson, entre otros. También
aparece en el álbum Mingus at Monterey de Charles Mingus. También colaboró con The Beach Boys y The Turtles,
entre otros. A partir de 1970, residió en Alemania,
donde realizó una exitosa gira
con su banda de etno jazz Mombasa.
