Kenneth Earl Burrell (nascut el 31 de juliol de 1931) és un guitarrista, cantant i compositor de
jazz estatunidenc, conegut pel seu treball en nombrosos segells discogràfics de
jazz de renom: Prestige, Blue Note, Verve, CTI, Muse i Concord. Les seves
col·laboracions amb Jimmy Smith van ser notables i van donar lloc a l'àlbum de Verve,
Organ Grinder Swing, que va aconseguir el Top 20 de Billboard en 1965. Burrell ha citat als guitarristes de jazz
Charlie Christian, Oscar Moore i Django Reinhardt com a influències, juntament
amb els guitarristes de blues T-Bone Walker i Muddy Waters.
Burrell és professor i director d'estudis de jazz a
l'Escola de Música Herb Alpert de la UCLA.
Burrell va néixer a Detroit. Els seus pares tocaven instruments i va
començar a tocar la guitarra als 12 anys després d'escoltar les gravacions de
Charlie Christian. Durant la Segona Guerra Mundial, a causa de l'escassetat de
metall, va abandonar la idea de convertir-se en saxofonista i es va comprar una
guitarra acústica per 10 dòlars. Escoltar a Oscar Moore li va inspirar a tocar
jazz, però va ser Django Reinhardt qui li va demostrar que es podia trobar la
pròpia individualitat en un instrument. Va estudiar composició i teoria amb
Louis Cabara i guitarra clàssica amb Joe Fava. Mentre estudiava en la
Universitat Estatal de Wayne, va debutar en la gravació com a membre del sextet
de Dizzy Gillespie en 1951, seguit del senzill "Rose of Tangier"/"Ground
Round", gravat sota el seu propi nom en Fortune Rècords de Detroit. Mentre
estava en la universitat, Burrell va fundar el col·lectiu New World Music Society

en 1965 com a moments destacats.
En 1978, va començar a impartir un curs en la UCLA
anomenat "Ellingtonia", que examinava la vida i els assoliments de Duke
Ellington. Encara que mai van col·laborar directament, Ellington va va nomenar a
Burrell el seu "guitarrista favorit", i Burrell ha gravat diversos
homenatges i interpretacions de les obres de Ellington. Des de 1996, Burrell ha
estat Director d'Estudis de Jazz en la UCLA, mentor d'exalumnes tan destacats
com Gretchen Parlato i Kamasi Washington
Burrell va escriure, va arreglar i va interpretar l'àlbum
Dear Ella de Dee Dee Bridgewater, guanyador del premi Grammy en 1998, va rebre
el premi a l'Educador de Jazz de l'Any 2004 de Down Beat i va ser nomenat
Maestro de Jazz de la NEA en 2005.
Burrell va ser guardonat amb el Grammy Salute To Jazz en
2010. El lloc web dels Grammy afirma que entre 1956 i 2006, el Sr. Burrell es
va destacar com a líder, colíder i acompanyant, gravant amb músics estel·lars
del jazz.
