Als 16 anys, va formar part de “The Chessman”, una banda que va telonejar Jimi Hendrix

1970: Va participar de nombroses bandes locals a Austin, fins que va decidir crear el seu propi grup, The Storm. Stevie Ray Vaughan, el seu germà menor, tocava el baix en aquesta banda

1976: Va formar la banda The Fabulous Thunderbirds amb el cantant i harmonicista Kim Wilson, el baixista Keith Ferguson i el bateria Mike Buck

1994: Va iniciar la seva carrera com a solista
