James
Ralph Spaulding Jr. és un
saxofonista i flautista de jazz estatunidenc.
Nascut a Indianapolis, Indiana, els Estats Units, Spaulding
va assistir a l'Escola de
Música Cosmopolitan de Chicago. Entre 1957 i 1961, va
ser membre de la banda de Sun
Ra. En la dècada de 1960, va treballar
com a músic d'estudi en Blue Note Rècords, gravant amb Wayne Shorter, Horace Silver i Stanley Turrentine. També
va ser membre del quintet
de Freddie Hubbard i del Quartet Mundial de Saxofons.
Va
continuar treballant amb alguns músics de post-bop com Max Roach,
Randy Weston i Woody Shaw. Sota la direcció de Mercer Ellington, en la dècada de 1970, Spaulding va tocar en l'Orquestra
de Duke Ellington. En la
dècada de 1980, Spaulding va treballar
amb Ricky Ford i, com a part d'un octet,
