Va començar a prendre lliçons de clarinet als vuit anys,
estudiant amb Caughey Roberts Als quinze, el seu company de classe de Jefferson High
School, Chico Hamilton, el
va instar a aprendre a tocar el saxofon
alt, i va fer el seu debut professional amb Jerome Myart aquest mateix any.
Quan es va graduar de Jefferson, tocava
amb Hamilton, Buddy Collette i Charles Mingus en
clubs de Central Avenue
En la dècada de 1940 va tocar amb Barney Bigard, Marshal Royal, Lucky Thompson, Kid Ory, Benny Carter, Benny Goodman, Lionel Hampton i Roy Milton Es va allistar en la Marina a l'octubre
de 1942 amb Marshal i Ernie Royal i, després d'entrenar-se en el Campament
Robert Smalls, va ser destinat
