Harvey Mason és un compositor i bateria estatunidenc de
jazz i jazz funk, a més d'un prestigiós músic de sessió.
Nascut en Atlantic City (Nova Jersey), en 1947, Harvey
Mason va començar a rebre lliçons de bateria amb només 7 anys, i des de llavors
va estar tocant en bandes escolars fins que va reunir suficients diners com per
a adquirir el seu primer set de bateria amb 16 anys. Ingressa en la prestigiosa
Berklee School of Music i completa els seus estudis de composició, arranjaments
i percussió i en el New England Conservatory of Music. Es trasllada a Boston,
on treballa amb Vic Firth, timbalista de la Boston Symphony Orchestra, i on duu
a terme treballs d'estudi gravant jingles per a anuncis de televisió i altres
treballs similars.
En 1970 treballa amb Erroll Garner, i en 1970-71 amb
George Shearing, període després del qual es trasllada a a Los Angeles per a
establir-se ràpidament com un prestigiós músic de sessió, produint música per a
cinema i televisió. Progressivament, Mason amplia el seu àmbit
laboral i durant aquest període inicial grava amb artistes tan importants com
Earth Wind and Fire, Minnie Riperton o Chick Corea. La consagració definitiva
de Mason té lloc amb l'arribada de la dècada dels 70, període durant el qual es
converteix en un dels bateries més destacats en l'àmbit del jazz funk, gravant
amb alguns dels millors artistes d'aquest gènere com Donald Byrd, Herbie
Hancock, The Headhunters, Grover Washington Jr., Bob James, Charles Earland,
Patrice Rushen, The Brecker Brothers, Lee Ritenour, John Klemmer, George Benson
o fins i tot Carlos Santana, entre una llarga llista.
En 1976 signa amb Aresta Rècords, i sota aquest segell
edita cinc àlbums en solitari; en 1996 signa amb Atlantic Rècords per a editar
"Ratamacue" i, finalment, en 2004 edita "With All My
Heart", la seva última gravació fins al moment. El conjunt dels seus
àlbums en solitari li valen cinc nominacions als Grammy.
A principis dels 90 funda el supergrup Fourplay, al
costat de Bob James, Nathan East i Lee Ritenour, una banda amb la qual edita
diversos discos (un dels quals arriba a disc de platí i tres a disc d'or) i
rep, fins al moment, 10 nominacions als Grammy. Independentment, Mason continua
els seus treballs de sessió, gravant entre altres amb Michel Colombier, Michel
Legrand, Dave Grusin, John Williams, Lalo Schifrin, Isaac Hayes, Johnny Pate,
Alan Silvestri, Thom Newman o Alan Menken i Tim Rice, a més d'aparèixer en els
crèdits d'un gran nombre de gravacions per a cinema i televisió. Com a
productor ha treballat amb artistes com Nancy Wilson, Mary J. Blige, Notorious
Big, T.I., Midnight Star, Lee Ritenour o Dionne Warwick.
A través d'una llarga i reeixida carrera que s'estén ja
al llarg de quatre dècades, la versatilitat d'Harvey Mason li ha permès brillar
en moltes i molt diverses situacions musicals.
Al costat d'aquesta versatilitat, la seva precisió rítmica li ha convertit, senzillament, en el
bateria de sessió més demandat i més gravat de tots els temps. No és sol
que ha treballat amb la majoria de les figures més destacades del panorama
musical nord-americà, sinó que ha participat també en la gravació de més de
1000 àlbums així com en centenars de gravacions per a cinema i televisió. El
seu impressionant currículum i la qualitat del seu treball li ha valgut el
reconeixement en forma de nombrosos premis i els seus beats continuen sonant en
els samples d'artistes contemporanis com The Notorious B.I.G.
El seu èxit de 1979, "Groovin' You" va ser sampleado en 1995 pel productor de música house Gust en el seu senzill
"Disc's Revenge".
