Fill d'un luthier immigrant
rus, Orloff intentava baixar el violí del seu pare del piano i tocar-lo. Tenia només tres anys. Als cinc, ja oferia recitals
a la seva ciutat natal,
Boston. Més tard, va oferir concerts en diversos escenaris, incloent-hi el Carnegie
Hall i l'Orquestra Simfònica
de Boston. Després d'obtenir
una beca en l'Institut Curtis de Música, va abandonar
l'estudi degut al seu horari i va trobar treball com a músic comercial, arribant a treballar, a vegades, fins a 15 hores diàries.
Durant la seva època, Orloff
va actuar amb artistes com Meat Loaf,
The Bee Gees,
Aretha Franklin, Frank Sinatra i Barbra
Streisand. La seva filla, Marcy, va dir que un dels seus favorits era Van McCoy.
A la
fi de la dècada de 1940, va estar en l'orquestra de Neal Hefti, juntament amb, entre altres, Curley Russell, Shelley Manne i Flip Phillips, en una data de gravació
acompanyant a Charlie Parker, i amb
el trio de Nat King Cole /The
Muleskinners, acompanyant a
Woody Herman en la veu.
Sota
la direcció de Van McCoy,
es va encarregar dels arranjaments d'instruments de vent i cordes de l'àlbum Faith Hope & Charity, publicat en 1970. Altres músics que van participar
en l'àlbum van ser Richard Tee
i Leon Pendarvis en teclats, els guitarristes
Eric Gale i David Spinozza, el baixista
Gordon Edwards, els percussionistes
Arthur Jenkins i George Devens, i el bateria Steve Gadd. També va
participar en l'àlbum Disc Baby
