Descoberta pel compositor Richard Berry, King va començar la seva carrera d'enregistrament en 1956 amb Little Clydie and the Teens; abans de ser membre de Raelettes de Ray Charles durant tres anys.

Va contribuir als enregistraments de principis dels anys seixanta de productor Phil Spector. Va gravar senzills en solitari per Specialty Records, Kent Records i altres.

Va proporcionar les veus de suport per a Humble Pie, i va esdevenir una cantant de sessió molt sol·licitada, va treballar amb Venetta Fields i Sherlie Matthews i va gravar amb BB King, The Rolling Stones, Steely Dan , Barbra Streisand, Bob Dylan, Linda Ronstadt, Joe Cocker, Dickey Betts, Joe Walsh i molts altres.
