Va ser un baixista estatunidenc de country rock. Va ser membre de la International Submarine Band (ISB) i de The Flying Burrito Brothers, i coescribió diverses cançons amb Gram Parsons. Ethridge va col·laborar amb Nancy Sinatra, Judy Collins, Leon Russell, Delaney Bramlett, Johnny Winter, Randy Newman, Graham Nash, Ry Cooder, Linda Ronstadt, The Byrds, Jackson Browne i Willie Nelson.

Va començar a tocar en bandes locals en el sud abans de mudar-se a Califòrnia als 17 anys, havent estat vist en Biloxi. Va tocar amb Joel Scott Hill abans d'unir-se a Gram Parsons en ISB; en 1971, Hill i Ethridge gravarien un àlbum en trio (LA Getaway) amb el bateria John Barbata, conegut pel seu treball amb The Turtles i Jefferson Starship. Va tocar amb Parsons després del final de ISB, i novament després que Parsons deixés The Byrds, abans de cofundar Burrito Brothers amb ell. Va tocar el baix i el piano en The Gilded Palace of Sense, però es va anar abans de Burrito Deluxe a causa de diferències creatives. Quan Parsons va deixar els Burritos, Ethridge va tornar a tocar breument amb ell, de gira amb Byron Berline, Emmylou Harris, Clarence White, Gene Parsons, Sneaky Pete Kleinow i Roland White en 1973. Després de la mort de Parsons, Ethridge va tocar en 1974 amb els Docker Hill Boys, un grup informal que incloïa a Gene Parsons i Joel Scott Hill. Aquests tres van refundar els Burritos en 1975 amb Sneaky Pete i Gib Guilbeau, gravant Flying Again.

Ethridge va deixar els Burritos novament al febrer de 1976, tornant al treball de sessió. Havia estat un músic de sessió al llarg de la seva carrera, gravant amb molts dels principals actes amb tints country, inclosos Nancy Sinatra, Judy Collins, Johnny Winter, Ry Cooder, Leon Russell, Randy Newman, Linda Ronstadt, The Byrds i Jackson Browne.
