Naixement 6 de setembre de 1968 en Sant Lluís, Missouri , els EUA
Cheek va néixer a Saint Louis, Missouri, on
el seu pare era el director d'una
banda d'una escola secundària. Cheek va començar a aprendre a tocar el
saxo alt als onze anys i, després
de graduar-se, va assistir a la Universitat
Webster. Va estudiar al Berklee
College of Music amb Joe Viola, Hal Crook i Herb
Pomeroy, i va obtenir la llicenciatura. Es va traslladar a
la ciutat de Nova York el 1992, on
va tocar amb Paul Motian a l'Electric Bebop Band i va
cofundar Bloomdaddies amb Seamus Blake. També va tocar amb
Guillermo Klein, Mika Pohjola,
Luciana Souza i David Berkman.
El seu primer llançament com a líder, I Wish I Knew, va aparèixer el 1997 amb Kurt Rosenwinkel,
i, el 2010, van seguir tres àlbums més en solitari amb Cheek com
a líder de la banda amb el segell
Fresh Sound; A Girl Named Joe
(1997), Vine (1999) i Blues Cruise, el 2005. Dos àlbums com a colíder – Lazy Afternoon i Guilty – van ser publicats per
Blue Moon el 2002. El 2016 un altre CD, Saturday Songs, va ser publicat per Sunnyside Records i gravat a Supertone Records, València. Criss Cross Jazz també
ha publicat dos àlbums de Cheek amb el colíder Seamus Blake. Cheek ha aparegut en més de cent àlbums com a músic
de sessió.
