Joseph Barry Galbraith (18 de
desembre de 1919 - 13 de gener de 1983) va ser un
guitarrista de jazz estatunidenc.
Es va mudar a la ciutat de Nova
York des de McDonald, PA a principis de la dècada de 1940 i va trobar treball tocant amb Babe Russin, Art Tatum, Red Norvo, Hal McIntyre i Teddy Powell. Va tocar
amb Claude Thornhill en
1941-1942 i novament en 1946-1949 després
de servir en l'exèrcit. Va fer
una gira amb Stan Kenton en
1953.
Va fer un extens
treball com a músic d'estudi per a NBC i CBS en les dècades de 1950 i
1960; entre aquells amb els quals va tocar estaven Miles Davis, Michel Legrand,
Tal Farlow, Coleman Hawkins, George Barnes, John
Lewis, Hal McKusick, Oscar Peterson,
Max Roach, George Russell, John Carisi,
Urbie Green i Tony Scott. També va acompanyar en el disc a les cantants
Anita O'Day, Chris Connor, Billie Holiday, Helen Merrill,
Sarah Vaughan i Dinah
Washington. Va ser mentor de Ralph Patt.
En 1961 va aparèixer en la pel·lícula After Hours. En 1963-1964 va tocar en l'àlbum
de Gil Evans The Individualism
of Gil Evans, i en 1965 va aparèixer en la banda
sonora de Stan Getz i Eddie Sauter
per a la pel·lícula Mickey One
de 1965. De 1970 a 1975 va ensenyar en CUNY i va
publicar un llibre de mètodes
de guitarra en 1982. De 1976 a 1977, Galbraith va ensenyar guitarra en el Conservatori
de Nova Anglaterra a Boston.
Va morir de càncer en Bennington a l'edat de 63 anys.
