Bethel Baptist Church de Detroit, Michigan, on el seu pare C. L. Franklin era
ministre.
Després d'un temps en el qual Aretha va començar a ser considerada una
jove prodigi, es comentava que Motown estava interessada a fitxar-la, però
finalment va signar amb el segell Columbia Rècords, sota la direcció de John
Hammond.
Va trobar aclamació i èxit comercial després de signar amb Atlantic
Rècords en 1966.
